Musicianship is more than just theory—it’s the language of music. Whether you’re just starting out or returning to music after many years, our Musicianship Classes at Hoff-Barthelson Music School offer a supportive, enriching space to explore the building blocks of music.

Designed for students from elementary school through adulthood, our program helps learners grow in key areas such as:
- Music theory and notation
- Ear training and aural skills
- Sight reading
- Composition and improvisation
- Music technology and digital tools
- Music history and listening
These skills deepen students’ understanding of what they play, sing, and hear—and make learning music more meaningful and enjoyable.
For School-Age Students

Our core Musicianship Program features five carefully designed levels that align with each student’s age and stage of musical development. These classes complement private lessons and ensembles, helping students build a strong musical foundation that accelerates their overall progress.
We also offer a Composition Program, where creative students can experiment with melody, harmony, and structure as they learn to write and develop their own pieces.
Older students can take advantage of our AP Music Theory Prep Course, designed to prepare them for success on the Advanced Placement exam and in college-level music studies.
Music History for All Ages

Our Music History class offers an engaging journey through the sounds, stories, and cultural context of music from around the world. Through listening, discussion, and interactive activities, students of all ages discover how music has evolved—and how it continues to inspire today. These classes build deeper appreciation and insight, enriching every musician’s experience.
Musicianship Labs
Our innovative Musicianship Lab Classes combine technology, independent learning, and collaborative discussion in a flexible, student-centered environment. Each class includes:
- A short instructor presentation
- Independent work using cloud-based tools
- Group discussion and interactive review
This blended approach supports different learning styles, encourages curiosity, and builds confidence. Students move at their own pace while receiving personalized support—and have fun while doing it!
