Hoff-Barthelson Music School’s mission is to inspire and develop each student’s potential through excellence in music education with a commitment to creativity, collaboration, and community.
Our vision is to enrich lives and create community through music.
Founded in 1944 by pianist Virginia Hoff and composer Joyce Barthelson, Hoff-Barthelson Music School was built on the belief that the joy of music and the ability to make it should be accessible to all. What began as a shared dream between two gifted musicians has grown into one of the most respected community music schools in the country, with a legacy of excellence that spans generations.
Today, Hoff-Barthelson continues to thrive as a vibrant cultural institution where students of all ages, abilities, and aspirations—whether pursuing music as a passion or profession—are empowered to grow and flourish in a warm, inclusive environment.
What Makes Hoff-Barthelson Special
- A joyful, supportive learning environment: Students are encouraged to explore their creativity and deepen their connection to music in an atmosphere that fosters personal growth and meaningful relationships with peers, teachers, and families.
- A whole-person approach: Music learning is holistic at HBMS. While building musical skills, students also strengthen critical life skills—focus, self-confidence, collaboration, empathy, and leadership—through shared music-making and performance experiences.
- Excellence in teaching: Our distinguished faculty—many of whom also perform and teach at top conservatories and stages in New York City and beyond—bring a wealth of experience and artistry. They tailor their teaching to the needs of each student, inspiring progress at every level.
- A rich, well-rounded curriculum: Our sequential and comprehensive program includes personalized private instruction; classroom study in theory, composition, and improvisation; and extensive performance opportunities, including recitals, festivals, workshops, and master classes with renowned guest artists.
- A deep commitment to community: Through our dynamic Outreach Program, students and faculty share the power of music beyond our walls—bringing performances to senior centers, nursing homes, community festivals, Head Start programs, and public events throughout Westchester County.
